Wow, can you believe that it has been 54 years since the release of the classic movie that touched everyone’s hearts, and vocal chords? The hills are definitely still alive. Let’s take a look at what Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and other members of the Von Trapp family look like since its release in 1965.
Duane Chase (Kurt von Trapp)
Chase did his role in The Sound of Music and then simply vanished from any spotlight without leaving a hint or clue (side note, we just found out about a Golden Girls Themed Clue Set & it’s amazing). He went in an altogether different career path and currently works as a software engineer in Seattle.
Heather Menzies (Louisa von Trapp)
Menzies’s career only got better after her role in The Sound of Music cast. She got roles in a lot of movies and TV shows, with the latest one being Spenser: For Hire. She passed away in 2017 of breast cancer.
Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich von Trapp)
Although he is most famous for his Peter Parker role in The Amazing Spider-Man, the eldest Von Trapp child stole many hearts with his acting in the musical film. He is currently a writer and director in Hollywood.
Charmian Carr (Liesl von Trapp)
Charmian’s role as 16-year-old Liesl in The Sound of Music was one of the star’s first and last film roles. In the late 1960s, the late star retired from acting to raise her two daughters and establish her own interior design business. The actress sadly died at age 73 in September 2016 Opens a New Window.
Angela Cartwright (Brigitta von Trapp)
In addition to starring in The Sound of Music, Angela, now 66, appeared in the 1960s TV series Lost in Space and in the 2009 movie The Bolt Who Screwed Christmas. She now works as a photographer.
Debbie Turner (Marta von Trapp)
Shortly after The Sound of Music hit theaters, the former child star, now 62, left the film industry to instead focus on her education. Since then, Debbie has relocated to Minnesota to raise four daughters with her husband, Rick.
Kym Karath (Gretl von Trapp)
Kym did not leave acting post the movie. She was seen with Angela Cartwright in Lost in Space and also did several other movies and series. She took time off to raise her son, but has returned since 2005.
Julie Andrews (Maria von Trapp)
Even at 81, Julie Andrews marvels her viewers with her acting skills. She was 30 when she starred in The Sound of Music, a role that got her the second Academy Award for best actress. Recently, she has voiced characters in Despicable Me and Shrek Forever After.
Christopher Plummer (Captain Georg von Trapp)
After The Sound of Music, Christopher, now 89, went on to have a successful acting career that has spanned more than five decades. He has starred in popular films including Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), A Beautiful Mind (2001), and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011).
